FreeSVGConverter does not accept native .dwg files. When geometry or scale matters, export SVG—or vector PDF or DXF—from trusted CAD software. Only export a PNG preview and trace it here when you need a non-technical visual approximation.
Do not upload, rename, or screenshot a DWG when precision matters
DWG contains CAD entities and drawing data that a raster-image tracer cannot read. Changing the extension does not change the file structure. A screenshot or PNG preview discards units, object types, layers, blocks, dimensions, constraints, metadata, and other CAD information before tracing even begins.
When dimensions matter: keep the route vector
Use this route for engineering drawings, architectural plans, fabrication geometry, surveys, schematics, measured diagrams, and any file that will guide construction, machining, cutting, inspection, or procurement. Export behavior varies with the DWG content and software, so validate rather than assuming equivalence.
Open the DWG in trusted CAD software
Use the software that created the drawing or a vetted CAD application that explicitly supports the DWG version and entities in the file. Resolve missing references, fonts, object enablers, and proxy objects before export.
Choose the intended 2D view or layout
SVG is a 2D format. Select the model-space view, paper-space layout, sheet, or documented projection you actually need. Confirm the coordinate system, units, drawing scale, viewport scale, and visible layers.
Prefer a native vector export
Export SVG directly when your trusted CAD workflow supports it. If it does not, export a vector PDF or DXF and use a vector-aware workflow that understands CAD geometry. Do not route engineering geometry through a screenshot or raster tracer.
Inspect the exported vector file
Check a known dimension, overall bounds, line types, arcs, splines, hatches, text, fonts, clipping, layers, fills, and referenced content. An SVG viewBox or downstream import can change how units are interpreted, so verify scale in the destination application.
Keep the DWG as the authoritative source
Use the SVG as a publication or interchange derivative only after validation. Preserve the reviewed DWG and any vector PDF or DXF export used to create the SVG so changes can be traced back to the CAD source.

Raster fallback for non-technical visuals
This fallback is suitable only when the SVG will serve as an illustration rather than an authoritative drawing. In trusted CAD software, choose the intended view, hide unneeded or sensitive content, and export a clear PNG preview. You may then trace the pixels into new SVG paths.

DWG to SVG questions
Can I upload a native .dwg file to FreeSVGConverter?
No. The production uploader accepts PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, and AVIF raster images up to 10 MB. It does not accept DWG, DXF, PDF, or other native CAD and document files.
What is the right way to convert DWG geometry to SVG?
When geometry or scale matters, open the DWG in trusted CAD software and use a native SVG export if available. Otherwise, export vector PDF or DXF and continue in a vector-aware CAD or design workflow. Validate the result against known dimensions and the source drawing.
Can I trace a PNG preview of a DWG drawing?
Yes, but only as a non-technical visual approximation for uses such as a web illustration, slide, or simplified documentation graphic. Pixel tracing does not preserve CAD units, dimensions, layers, blocks, constraints, topology, or entity types.
Is a raster-traced SVG suitable for fabrication, construction, or measurement?
No. Do not treat a traced preview as dimensionally authoritative or use it as a cut path, toolpath, survey, plan, manufacturing drawing, or construction document. Use validated vector geometry exported from the CAD source and follow the destination workflow’s checks.
Which fallback image formats can I trace?
FreeSVGConverter accepts PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, and AVIF images up to 10 MB. For a CAD-derived fallback, export a clear PNG preview from trusted CAD software, then trace only if the result is intended as a non-technical visual.
Does the free credit convert a DWG file?

Can a 3D DWG be exported to SVG?
