Why Transparent Backgrounds Are Non-Negotiable for Print-on-Demand
Print-on-demand platforms like Printful, Printify, and Redbubble print your design directly onto products — t-shirts, hoodies, mugs, phone cases, tote bags. If your design file has a white or colored background instead of transparency, that background prints as a visible rectangle on the product. On a navy blue t-shirt, a design with a white background becomes a white box with art inside it. Transparent PNGs are the only acceptable format for POD.
Each POD platform has specific file requirements, but they all converge on one point: transparent PNG at high resolution. Printful requires 150 DPI minimum (300 DPI recommended) at the product's print area dimensions. Redbubble needs specific pixel dimensions per product (e.g., 2400x3200 for standard t-shirts). Printify varies by print provider but generally requires 300 DPI. Your transparent cutout needs to meet these specs to avoid rejection or poor print quality.

Pro Tips for Better Results
Check your design against dark AND light product colors
After removing the background, preview your design on both a dark and light background. Designs with thin lines or light colors can disappear on white products, while designs with dark edges may lose definition on black products. Some POD sellers create two versions — one optimized for light garments and one for dark.
Export at the largest product dimensions you plan to use
Create your transparent PNG at the largest size any POD platform requires. For Printful all-over prints, that can be 4500x5100 pixels. For Redbubble, some products need 7632x6480 pixels. It is always easier to scale down than to upscale later — start large and let each platform resize as needed.
Use sRGB color profile for consistent color across products
POD platforms use sRGB as their standard color space. If your design was created in CMYK or Adobe RGB, convert to sRGB before exporting your transparent PNG. Colors outside the sRGB gamut will be clipped, often shifting vibrant reds and greens in unexpected ways. Convert early so you can adjust colors before uploading.
Add a 0.125-inch bleed for products that print edge-to-edge
Products like phone cases, all-over print shirts, and canvas prints extend the design past the trim edge. Extend your design (or the background-removed cutout) slightly beyond the safe area dimensions listed in each platform's template. This prevents thin white lines at product edges from printing misalignment.
