XCF to SVG: Choose GIMP Path Export or Raster Tracing

FreeSVGConverter does not accept .xcf files and cannot preserve GIMP layers. If your project contains real GIMP paths, export those paths directly as SVG. Otherwise, export the visible artwork as a raster image and trace that flattened result as an approximation.

Do not upload a renamed XCF file

Changing the extension from .xcf to .png or .svg does not convert the project. Open the XCF in GIMP and export the appropriate content. Keep the original XCF as the editable project file.

Start with What the XCF Contains

An XCF can contain raster layers, text, masks, filters, and optional GIMP paths. Those lead to two different workflows.

The XCF Contains Real GIMP Paths

Export the paths directly from GIMP as SVG. Do not flatten them to pixels and trace them again.

  1. 1. Open the XCF in GIMP and inspect the Paths panel or dialog.
  2. 2. Select the path you need and use GIMP's path export command.
  3. 3. Save the path with an .svg extension. Labels and locations can vary by GIMP version.
  4. 4. Open the SVG in a vector editor and confirm its geometry, scale, and fills or strokes.
This route starts from existing vector geometry. It does not use a FreeSVGConverter credit.
The Artwork Exists Only as Layers and Pixels

Export the visible composite as a raster image, then trace that exported image into new SVG paths.

  1. 1. Keep the original XCF and decide which layers should be visible.
  2. 2. Export the visible result from GIMP, preferably as PNG.
  3. 3. Upload the exported PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, or AVIF image to the tracer.
  4. 4. Preview the generated SVG and check shapes, colors, text, backgrounds, and path complexity.
  5. 5. Refine the SVG in a vector editor before using it in a production workflow.
This route uses one tracing credit. The SVG is an approximation of the exported pixels, not a layered conversion of the XCF project.

What Each Workflow Can Carry Forward

Direct Path Export
Exports selected GIMP path geometry. Confirm stroke, fill, scale, and path organization after export.
Raster Trace
Estimates SVG paths from visible pixels. Results vary with contrast, detail, compression, effects, and image complexity.
XCF Project Structure
Layers, masks, editable text, blend modes, filters, guides, and other GIMP project data are not preserved by raster tracing.

Supported Raster Exports for Tracing

Native XCF is not supported. Export one of these raster formats from GIMP when no usable GIMP path exists.

PNG

Preferred when you need lossless pixels or transparency.

JPG / JPEG

Supported, but compression artifacts can affect the trace.

WebP

Supported raster fallback for exported web artwork.

AVIF

Supported raster fallback when that is the available export.

XCF to SVG Questions

Can I upload an .xcf file directly?

No. The uploader accepts PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, and AVIF images, not native GIMP .xcf project files. Open the project in GIMP and choose either direct path export or a raster export workflow first.

Can raster tracing preserve my GIMP layers?

No. A PNG, JPG, WebP, or AVIF export is a flattened raster representation of the visible result. Tracing estimates paths from those pixels; it cannot preserve XCF layers, masks, editable text, blend modes, filters, guides, or layer names.

What if the XCF already contains GIMP paths?

Export those paths as SVG from GIMP instead of rasterizing and tracing them. That route starts from the actual Bézier path geometry already in the project and avoids introducing a new raster-trace approximation.

Why is PNG the preferred tracing fallback?

PNG is lossless and can retain transparency, so it avoids the compression artifacts associated with JPG. It is still a raster image, however, and tracing it will not recreate the XCF project structure.

Does the traced SVG match the XCF exactly?

No. The tracer approximates visible shapes and color regions. Fine texture, gradients, effects, small text, soft edges, and complex layer composites may simplify or change. Preview the SVG and refine it in a vector editor when needed.

When is a FreeSVGConverter credit used?

A credit is used only when you upload an exported PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, or AVIF image for raster tracing. A new account receives one conversion credit after email verification. Exporting an existing GIMP path directly as SVG happens in GIMP and does not use this service.
